Le Mancel, is a restaurant established within the very walls of Caen’s ducal castle, next to the Fine Arts Museum and the Normandy Museum, and just a short walk from St Peter’s Church and the historic town centre. It is located opposite the castle ramparts and the charming statues garden. Opened in 1994, it pays tribute to Pierre Bernard Mancel, who was a Caen-born bookseller and collector. Pierre Bernard Mancel, a humble donator, bequeathed 45 17th-century Dutch paintings and a few other Italian and Flemish works to the town of Caen upon his death in 1872. They included Virgin and Child by Rogier van der Weyden and St James by Cosimo Tura, together with objets d’art and his print collection, all of which are displayed within the Fine Arts Museum.
