The underground ice cellar of Caen

Built in the 19th century, this underground ice cellar was designed to keep foodstuffs cool. In June and July 1944, during the Battle of Caen, dozens of inhabitants of the district took refuge there. Guided tours are offered in season.

Founded by the famous William the Conqueror in 1063, the choir of the abbey church now houses the tomb of the Duke of Normandy who became King of England. The church adjoins the Abbaye aux Hommes, which now houses the Caen Town Hall.

The Chessboard Room of Caen Castle

To the north of the Caen castle walls, the Chessboard Room dates from the end of the 11th century. Formerly a reception and residence at the time of the Dukes of Normandy, it is now open every day and hosts temporary exhibitions in season.

The main entrance to Caen Castle in the 13th century, the Field Gate has undergone numerous transformations since the Hundred Years War. Little damaged by the 1944 bombings, it represents a fine example of medieval defensive architecture.

The chapel connected to the psychiatric hospital has been disused since 1999. It was rebuilt in 1956 on the site of the former Capuchin chapel. The large 19th century neo-gothic building that frames it and the spire have been preserved by the architect.

A place steeped in history, the Abbaye d’Ardenne is now home to the Institut Mémoires de l’édition contemporaine. The abbey church has been transformed into an impressive and modern library. The site, located in Saint-Germain-la-Blanche-Herbe, is open to the public and can be visited during guided tours.
