In the Mendelssohn family, we ask? the sister! Felix may have risen to the rank of the greatest composers, but posterity has reserved a meager place for Fanny in the musical pantheon. An excellent pianist, as precocious as her younger brother, Fanny was opposed by her family, who refused to allow her to pursue a professional career. In her catalog of over four hundred scores, her String Quartet is considered an important contribution to the repertoire. When Fanny died of a stroke at the age of 41, her brother was devastated. In her honor, he wrote the heart-rending Quartet n°6, before succumbing to the same illness a few months later.
This concert also invites us on a journey to Mediterranean lands, with Les Deux Visages de l?Orient, a work for solo violin premiered in 2006 by Saed Haddad, a Jordanian composer at the confluence of Arab and Western musical cultures.
