Conférence – 1589, Caen dans la tourmente des guerres de Religion : La révolte partout et des pouvoirs vacillants

label millénaire

The conference will focus on the events of 1589, a pivotal year that saw the accession to the French throne of a Protestant prince, Henri de Navarre, and the spread of war and its horrors to Normandy. Caen was a refuge for the Parliament of Normandy and a rear base for the royal power?s attempts to pacify the campaigns raised against the king. These attempts met with mixed results, accompanied by violence and humiliation, particularly towards Caen?s magistrates.

Émeric Masselis was born in 1972 and teaches literature and history-geography at the Jules Verne vocational high school in Mondeville. In 2018, he began studying history to work on his grandfather?s deportation diaries. His meeting with Alain Hugon in Licence III oriented him towards the Wars of Religion in Normandy. After completing a Master II in 2021 on the Gautiers revolt (1586-1589), he has been pursuing a PhD since 2023, under the supervision of Ariane Boltanski (Caen) and Philippe Hamon (Rennes), studying the "upheavals and unrest in the Normandy countryside" between 1562 and 1598.
