At over five hectares in size, Caen Castle is one of Europe?s largest castles. Situated on a rocky spur overlooking the city, its origins date back to the reign of William the Conqueror in the mid-11th century. Numerous architectural and functional evolutions followed its construction.

Alban Gottfrois, a historian at the University of Caen, is the author of a thesis (in progress) on Le château de Caen, de la forteresse ducale à la caserne Lefebvre (XIe s. ? fin du XIXe s.). Étude architecturale, archéologique et historique.
