The Department?s Archaeology Department is opening its doors to the public to show them how archaeologists carry out investigations to learn more about the history of Caen from its origins to the present day.
Workshops - discovering archaeologists? investigative techniques
Reserved for families, schools and leisure centers
Participants in small groups carry out their own archaeological investigation. Using archival documents, urban plans, remains and objects from archaeological operations carried out in the heart of the city, budding archaeologists conduct their research to tell Caen?s forgotten story.
Like the departmental archaeologists, they have to analyze the documents provided, meet specialists in the laboratory and gather all the information they need to solve the investigation. Each investigation is a window onto an era in Caen's history, and when they are brought together, they highlight the city's transformations over the course of history.
Discovery tours for all
Visitors can also take a tour of the archaeologists' working laboratory, and discover excavation sites that have recently taken place in Caen (tramway, Place de la République).
