Born in Bern in 1957, Thomas Hirschhorn studied in Zurich before moving to Paris in 1983. Since the mid-1980s, the artist has been creating precarious sculptures in materials such as cardboard, aluminum foil, adhesive tape and plastic. Adding photocopies, images cut out from newspapers or magazines, and photographs, he inscribes in marker his comments or questions on recurring themes: art, economics, politics and philosophy.
"The problem of falling monuments is not new in itself, but recently it has accelerated and hardened. That monuments are destroyed, vandalized, dismantled, or simply turned into ruins by the wear and tear of time, has existed - indeed - for as long as monuments have been built. My position on the subject has always been defined by the assertion that only a monument built out of love can last. My recent work, Model for a Monument, insists on the logic that any monument carries its own demise when it is based on power, ideology, domination or intimidation." (?)
