Since the Renaissance, artists have been exploring the paradoxes of the horizon, playing with perception, representation and the sharing of space. A moving line, it moves with us, dissolves in fog or storm, and suggests a world beyond the visible. Whether it unifies space, opens the view to infinity or marks a boundary, it structures our vision and experience of the world. From the perspective invented in the Renaissance to contemporary digital works, art never ceases to question our relationship with the horizon.
Opening with the Marriage of the Virgin by Perugino (1504), the exhibition features some 100 works from the 16th to the 21st century, by Albrecht Dürer, Joachim Patinir, Caspar David Friedrich, Gustave Courbet, Anna-Eva Bergman, Jan Dibbets, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Sophie Ristelhueber, Elina Brotherus, Tania Mouraud, Tacita Dean, Capucine Vever...
The paintings, drawings, engravings, installations and videographs on display are complemented by a unique collection of rare editions of perspective treatises published between the 16th and 19th centuries. At a time when the world is being reconfigured by networks, and billionaires aspire to leave the earth?s horizon, the Musée des Beaux-Arts invites us to reconsider its existential, imaginary and material scope.
