The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen, La Teinturerie and Ardi-Photographies join forces to present the photographic work of Mathieu Lion. Just a few generations ago, it was said that the earth was originally devoid of fire, and that it was birds that brought it to mankind. With Une cosmologie paysanne, Mathieu Lion photographs the contemporary landscape in dialogue with an ancient myth.
His work lies at the crossroads of art photography and the human sciences, and invites us to shift our point of view and develop a different approach to nature. It's about changing our representations of the landscape by borrowing other perspectives on the countryside: those of animals and those of our pre-modern ancestors.
Contrary to nostalgic refrains and modern dualisms, the work invites us to rehabilitate the cosmology of the countryside in order to calm the dialogue between our society and the non-human forces that seem to threaten it.
The exhibition will travel to three venues: August 8 to 28: La Teinturerie September 1 to November 30: L'Orée August 15 to November 30: Galerie Mancel
