In the landscape of the Caen area, a silhouette stood out: a factory that was once known to all and which, at the height of its production, had more than 6,000 employees. It was the Société Métallurgique de Normandie.
Closed in 1993, only a few traces remain today, symbols of an industrial past that was the driving force behind the entire region. Today, as in the past, these markers of Caen's port landscape raise questions. How was the SMN seen by those who did not know it? How did the press make it possible to understand this industrial fortress standing on the heights overlooking the city of Caen? What environmental impact did SMN have? What mutations of the site can be observed?
These are just some of the questions that the SMN Memory and Heritage Association will answer during an original visit tracing the origins and history of the Société Métallurgique de Normandie (a 5.5 kilometer long tour).
