Situated at the foot of four hills, the city of Caen spreads out in the lower valley of the Orne.
The hills were commonly called mountains or mounts in the Middle Ages. The Sepulchre, rebuilt in 1761, still has a Romanesque part; the church, once round, kept a piece of the True Cross before which all the people of Caen knelt on Good Friday.
The faubourg du Vaugueux, well hidden, is not ignored by tourists; it is in a way our Place du Tertre.
