làThe place where History was writtenFeedbackUnusual Posted on 28.11.2023
The big day has arrived! We are going on a first flight in helicopter. And for this first time, we have chosen to fly over Pegasus Bridge and Sword Beach with the company Héli Evènements.
The weather conditions are ideal: a clear blue sky, no wind and exceptional visibility. The flight could indeed take place.
Axelle, manager of the Héli Evènements company, welcomes us warmly and explains to us what’s going to happen in next few minutes. After assembling the passengers, she explained the safety instructions, and places each of us aboard the aircraft. We felt that safety is a top priority. The VIP-configured Ecureuil AS 350 B3e / H125 helicopter seats 5 passengers in total comfort. Each of us will be able to enjoy a panoramic view.
We meet Olivier, the pilot, before taking flight. All these commands are impressive but Olivier has a long flying experience, particularly on television shoots.
With the helmet tightly put on our ears, the blades start up and we take off very gently. Soft music plays in our headphones and I begin to imagine being a bird discovering the landscapes seen from the sky.
We take off from Carpiquet and quickly arrive above the sea. It’s fantastic! The blue of the sea, the yellow of sand and the green of the fields form an incredible palette of colors. The turns over the sea are impressive but we felt safe throughout the flight.
By choosing this circuit, we fly over the magnificent seaside resort of Ouistreham Riva-Bella! This small town, which has become highly touristic today, was a strategic point during the landings on Sword Beach. We continue the flight to Pegasus Bridge in Bénouville, one of the most famous bridges in military history. First bridge liberated in France in 1944, it spans the canal from the city of Caen to the sea.
After 20 minutes of flight, it’s time to land, again, very softly. You might think it’s short but it remains a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the first minutes of flight, stress and apprehension gave way to wonder.
