Founded in around 1063 by William the Conqueror, the prestigious Sainte Etienne de Caen Benedictine abbey, known as the Abbey aux Hommes (the Men's Abbey), was consecrated in 1077. Its 11th–13th-century abbey church constitutes one of the most monumental religious buildings in Normandy. The 18th-century monastic buildings (panelled rooms, paintings, staircases, cloisters) house the City Hall. The Abbaye aux Hommes forms part of the Circuit on the Route of Canadian Remembrance, paying tribute to the 500,000 Canadian soldiers who fought to deliver freedom to the French people on two occasions in the 20th century.
