Built around 1060 by William the Conqueror, the ducal castle became the favourite place of residence among the Norman dukes and kings of England who transformed it into one of Europe's vastest fortified enclosures. The ramparts, Porte des Champs gate, vestiges of the great keep, Hall of the Exchequer and the Church of Saint-Georges bear witness to the eventful history of the site that houses the Musée de Normandie (Normandy Museum) and the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum), and their exhibitions. After a vast redevelopment programme, the castle now offers new viewpoints over the town from the restored rampart belvedere, and unveils many secrets, hitherto buried under the artillery terrace, now highlighted in the Rampart Rooms. During development work, the ‘Château en Chantier’ operation proposes a scientific programme.
