Just a stone's throw from Ouistreham beach and ferry terminal and 5 minutes from Pegasus Bridge, the Atlantic Wall Museum is located inside the former headquarters of the German Army commanding the batteries of the Orne estuary. This tower, made from 5 thousand tonnes of concrete and steel and unique in its kind, looks down over the villas of Riva-Bella from a height of 17 metres and has been restored and redeveloped to look just as it did on 6 June 1944. Over its six floors, you'll discover all the rooms, redeveloped to take on their original functions – the machine room, the filter room, barracks, pharmacy, infirmary, armoury, munitions store, map room, radio-transmission room, switchboard, observation post with rangefinder and more. Likewise, you'll also find spaces dedicated to elite troupes and their special equipment used to overcome the Atlantic Wall. In particular: A real landing barge, restored and used to film 'Saving Private Ryan' – the PA 30'31 barge is the very same one kitted out by Steven Spielberg as 'landing craft M' in his famous, 5-Oscar-winning film.
