Conservatoire & Orchestre de Caen

Founded in 1835, the Conservatoire de Musique de Caen, which became the École Nationale de Musique in 1853, was designated a branch of the Paris Conservatoire on the eve of the Second World War. At the end of the war, after two successive moves, the establishment was classified by the State as a National School of Music and Dance, while the Caen Orchestra was created. This was followed by classification as a Conservatoire National de Région (1979), the first edition of the Aspects des Musiques d?Aujourd?hui festival (1982), delivery of the new building (1984) and the birth of La Maîtrise de Caen (1987). At the turn of the 2000s, the Conservatoire and Orchestre de Caen were transferred from the City of Caen to the Communauté d?agglomération Caen la mer (now the Communauté urbaine).

As part of the drive to become a Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRR), the school has integrated the teaching of drama and jazz dance, offered a musicology degree in performance - in collaboration with the conservatoires of Rouen and Grand Couronne Petit Couronne, the University of Rouen and CEFEDEM Normandie - and set up its Centre Régional Ressources Handicap Musique et Danse (CRRHMD), a benchmark in the field.

With an original format that is unique in Europe, the Conservatoire & Orchestre de Caen, whose artistic and pedagogical ambitions are detailed in its 2019-2024 establishment project, now brings together in a single facility a music, dance and theater teaching center, a wide range of awareness-raising and mediation activities, and a substantial outreach program structured around the Orchestre de Caen?s musical season.
